What are the boundries of Scottsdale Cal Ripken?
As of Spring 2025, with the introduction of the Shadow Mountain Area Sports Home (SMASH), we do have boundaries.
SMASH covers the area West of 40th Street and South of Cactus Road. Scottsdale Cal Ripken maintains coverage over all the other space.
If families are in the boundaries of SMASH but previously registered with Scottsdale Cal Ripken, they may stay with Scottsdale Cal Ripken.
This is subject to change season to season as a new charter might be established.
What are the ages for Scottsdale Cal Ripken?
What is the age cutoff for the league?
We use April 30th of the current year to determine the player's "baseball age". The player uses this age for both the Spring and Fall Season.
Please refer to our age chart page here. Included on the page is also the Babe Ruth age chart for reference.
What type of Bats may the children use?
Our league only allows USA marked bats at all division levels.
Where do you play the games?
The fields we utilize for practice and games include but are not limited to:
- Thompson Peak Park
- Grayhawk Community Park
- Sonoran Hills
- Aztec Park
- Cheyenne Elementary
- Reach 11
- Desert Canyon Middle School and
- Curt Schilling Field at Indian Bend Elementary.
What are the dates for the Spring and Fall Seasons?
Our Spring Season runs from late January to early-May. Our Fall season runs from the weekend after Labor Day to the weekend after Thanksgiving. These ranges are approximations and change slightly from year to year.
How many games and practices per week?
T-Ball, Coach Pitch, Machine Pitch and 8u generally have one practice and one game per week.
Tball and Coach Pitch will practice in the outfield at one of the fields.
Minors (spring only) and Majors play two games per week and also practice once a week. The times and days for games will vary based on the season and park permit availability.
Can we request our child to be on a team with friends?
We will do our best to honor those request for both T-Ball and Rookie Teams. There is a field on the registration form to indicate a friend that you would like to be teamed with.
A coach can organize a team and bring them in as a group as well.
What is the cost?
Registration fees vary depending on the division. The fee includes a jersey, a hat, and pictures.
You should assume additional personal costs for pants, socks and belt based on your assigned uniform that will be communicated by your coach.
End of season awards are included for all participants from Tball through Machine Pitch divisions.
Registration fees include a single or double elimination playoff for 8U and up divisions. Awards are for Winners and Finalists of the respective playoff brackets.
Umpires are included in league costs from 8U upwards through the 12U Majors division.
Please visit our current Registration page to review pricing.
Do I need a Coaching Certification?
Certification tuition is paid for by the league and is required for coaches and assistant coaches who wish to coach a team.
The Cal Ripken Baseball Web site makes it easy for you to gain your certification quickly and effectively through the convenience of online learning.
The Babe Ruth League/Ripken Baseball Coaching Certification Program is developed and delivered by the American Sport Education Program in conjunction with Babe Ruth League, Inc. and Ripken Baseball, Inc. For more than 25 years, local, state, and national sport organizations have partnered with ASEP to lead the way in making sport a safe, successful, and enjoyable experience for all involved.
Our Executive Director will provide instructions on how you can get your course.
More information on the request for School Documentation....
- Why do you require this information?
This is not our requirement per se as a league, but a requirement of the City of Scottsdale that has competing requests from others for City resources.
- Why does the City require this and how does impact the league?
As a league with participants all over the map, to maintain our status as a high level partner for permitting, we need to hit a certain participant threshold. If we do not have the supporting information for an audit, we run the risk of:
- Losing access to fields we have historically have had access to
- Changes in pricing made available to us (which then gets passed to you)
- Do I need to live in Scottsdale to participate in Scottsdale Cal Ripken?
No. Our boundaries remain the same. Refer to this league FAQ (first question).
- I don't live in Scottsdale, do I need to still provide this information?
As a league, we are trying to maximize our participation count for Scottsdale. This does not include just residents of the City but also families that:
a) attend an SUSD school but may not live in the City of Scottsdale - for example, a large group of families live in the 85254 zip code, may be zoned for Sequoia (SUSD) and these families have Scottsdale postal addresses but really live in the City of Phoenix. The fact that some of these families go to a SUSD helps our counts although technically City of Phoenix residents (regardless of what the postal address says).
b) attend a school that has ballfields that are maintained by the City - Grayhawk is an example of a PVSD school -- again, the fact that participants attend Grayhawk regardless of home address is a positive to the league.
These are just a few examples, but hopefully help provide context.
Lastly, we don't want to overcomplicate the registration process and have applied the requirement to all registrants. While not a requirement as of now, we may have similar requirements in the future with the City of Phoenix so we applying the requirement of documentation globally. With the amount of scenarios, its not really feasible to require this information conditionally within TeamSnap.
